Ford boxes

Hello,

This has probably been covered before but, I still need help. Just put deposit on a Viento, yipeeeeeeeeee.... The Plan is to stick a RV8 in here, poss 3.5 or 3.9, poss Carb maybe Fuel Injection. Two questions, is the Type 9 box out of the sierra etc strong enough for the V8 or would I be better with the Borgwarner T5 box. Having had a TVR with the T5 box in was dream to use and had good motorway cruising engine rpm. Not sure what the gearing ratio's are between the two on final drive.

Am I right in saying that the 4ltr Range Rover V8's have a lower compression ratio.

Cheers for ay advice.

Darren

T5 definately. A Type 9 would never cope with the amount of torque an RV8 puts out.

Hi Darren,

I'm building a fuel injected 3.9 with a T5 box. The T5 is probably the best choice, but be aware that it may be difficult to obtain a suitable bellhousing on the cheap. Your options are either a TVR item or the V8 auto bellhousing with an adaptor plate. I suspect the latter is bigger which is not helpful for squeezing it as far back in the chassis as possible, but you should have no problems in a Viento.

Also note that T5 boxes come with a very wide variety of ratios. I've got a really good link somewhere which I'll dig out and post when I can.

With my 3.62 LSD I'm not expecting perfect gearing. It should manage just over 100mph, but this will be on or close to the red line!

Regarding compression ratio:

I'm not sure about the bigger capacities, but some 3.9s are lower compression. In all cases the compression ratio is stamped on the block by the engine number. My high compression 3.9 is 9.45 from memory.

The 3.5 RR engine came in 9.35 and 8.13 compression ratio. the difference being 15 bhp on the injection models.

The 3.9 RR engine has CR of 9.35 or 8.13 and the difference in power is 7KW.

As I understood it landrover changed to the lower compression ratio early on as a lot of them were used in areas of the world that had 'dodgy' fuel octain levels, which the low CR engines coped better with.

Out of interest the high compression RRv8's need min 95/96 octane feul and the low compression RRv8's need min 90-93 octane feul.

The above information is taken from the range rover workshop manual from landrover. Except the bit about dodge fuel, which is word of mouth.

cheers for replies,

T5 Box it is then, am I right in saying these are in the 4x4 and cosworth sierra's, is it straight forward to change 4x4 box to 2wd or should I forget that and find a 2wd one.

The reason I'm not going for the rover sd box is that I've heard lots of people warn about failures in the rover box, this was also a big talking point when I bought the TVR and was advised to go for one with the T5 box in.

Cheers
Darren
