Zetec water pump

Does anyone know if it is possible to distinguish a Mondeo water pump from an Escort / Fiesta one without taking it off the engine?

We have what we initially believed to be a Mondeo 1.8 unit, but on investigation into the casting numbers it seems like the engine might have come from an Escort. If it came from a Mondeo, the water pump spins the wrong way, but if it is an Escort then apparently it is fine. I would rather leave the pump alone if we can get away with it, so I am wondering if we can make the distinction without taking it out. Any ideas?

I think the Mondeo one has a smooth pulley as it is driven off the back of the alternator belt. I've fitted a Fiesta RS1800 water pump and pully which has a grooved pulley.

If you are changing the timing belt (worth doing for sake of few quid) the pump is easy to take off to check.

I'm not sure the pully is still there... from memory the water pump has a square shaped 'cog' that I believe the pulley attached to.

The issue with taking the water pump off was purely one of laziness; in order to get at it I would need to remove the lower cover, which also involves removing the crankshaft pulley, and is alot of messing around if we don't need to bother.

Thanks conrod, that was where I got the info about the water pumps, but it doesn't tell you how to tell the difference between the two pumps. I guess I will go the 'if in doubt' route i.e. change it!

Zetec Water Pump

The Escort type has the water outlet at 90 degrees to the engine block (when looking down on the pump from above). The mondeo type has the outlet angled back toward the back (flywheel) side of the engine by about 35 degrees. If you have the wrong type Raceline do a kit comprising Escort pump, correct pulley & gasket for about £45. Bear in mind that you will need to replace the cambelt if you have to change the pump. Looks like the info on your site could be useful too. Dunnells is five mins from where I live and have been very useful so far, so it is nice to see them mentioned.

Thanks Stuart,

When I was putting the Zetec in stylus I had real trouble getting info on how to do things. In the end I bought most of the bits from dunnel to find out 3 months later that in some cases I could have used standard ford parts. I'm currently helping my dad replace a 2.0 SOHC pinto with a 115ps mondeo Zetec 1800 (In a spartan !). We are hoping to make our own injection plenium and use the Ford ECU & sensors, we are taking photos along the way so there should be some more stuff on the website - soon !.

P.S. If you have a mondeo 1800/2000 zetec sump, the starter motor won't fit onto the T9 bell housing, you need to either fit a ECOSRT sump or get it modified ! - news hot off the press !

We are using Dunnell's shallow sump so hopefully that won't be a problem.

I had a look at the pump and it seems to come straight out the side of the block so I am guessing we have already got the right one! Should save a few quid. Sounds like we probably started out with an Escort engine then, rather than a Mondeo as informed. I am assuming the angle of the outlet is noticeably different? I have a couple of pics if you wouldn't mind having a look.

Water pump woes

Hello Stuart,

If you bought a sump you really do net to save some £££'s !

I dug out a photo of my engine before most of the bit's and bobs where bolted on, you can just about see the water pump connection. hope it is of some use Rescued attachment zetec.jpg

I thought I would dig out my old Mondeo pump last night, and as mentioned the inlet pipe is angled back compared to the Escort/Fiesta one which is dead straight. I took the part number off the Mondeo pump which is 938m-8505-AF A143B. If your still unsure and the pump is OE call your local Ford dealer and they should be able to tell from the part number.

Thats great information guys. From what you have described it is almost certain that the engine is out of an escort. Now that I have a part number should be able to make 100% sure.
