Engine identification

X-flow engines.
How are they identified externally ie how can I tell difference between 1100, 1300 and 1600.
What are their engine numbers references ?

There is a code cast into the side that tells you the block type and size. I haven't got it handy, but I'll try and post it tonight.

If you're serious about getting a X-flow, look out for the books by Peter Wallage. There's a whole chapter on identifying engines, etc.

From what I can remember from Classic Ford magazine. There is a code on the block.

If it says AA on it (After the 711 or 701), it is an 1100 or 1300.

1600s have AB stamped on the block.

Apparently all the bores are the same diameter and the differences in cubic capacity are to do with the length of travel of the pistons. I think there are different crankshafts and pistons to achieve this and possibly deeper blocks but I am just guessing now. Someone better informed will be along shortly

If you cant read the letters the measure the height of the block. Trouble is its so long since I played with one I cant remember what the measurement is.
Me thinks a 1.6 is about 2" from the waterpump to the head face.

see how many fingers you can get between the stat housing and the waterpump casing,2=11/1300 3=1600

AA on the block = 1100/1300

BA on the block (Not AB) = 1600

Block on 1600 is exactly 1 inch taller.

I've searched the site & read the above, but can anyone help me identify the crossflow I've just aquired?

The number cast on the side of the block is: 681F6015DA (definately a D not a B!)

The number stamped at the top of the block is: JP18839

Any ideas?

According to a chart I have the J in the JP part shows the engine as a 1988.

681F was an early X-flow & the Ford chart shows the JP code as April 1969.
