x-flow oil pump
Well after sorting out the sump to hold more oil (got to rechop it as it's too low now), it would appear the oil pump on the old boat anchor
is the culprit,
A question (aimed mainly at David Jenkins) is can they be fixed, symptoms are 3 bar(45Psi) from the high pressure pump when cold at idle then
dropping to 1bar when the engine gets hot, the pressure rises back to 3bar when the rev's get above 2000rpm.
Don't think Burton will take the pump back as it was brought in July 02!! even though it's only covered 300 miles.
Many thanks in advance Dan.

First question is what oil are you using?
My Crossflow seemed to like gloopy stuff to maintain oil pressure. It wasn't keen on modern oils at all.
S
PS are you using a mechanical or electrical gauge? I *always* use a mechanical gauge for setup nowadays.

I have a standard oil pump and get 45psi above 2000rpm and 15 to 20 at tickoverwhen hot.
When i first ran the car I had cheap 20/50 oil in it and the pressure used to drop when hot, i then changed to Duckhams 20/50 and found it much more
stable .Valvoline is said to be the best stuff to use and easily available from local factors.

15 psi on idle when hot sounds normal ?

Cheers folks,
I'm running 20/50 but only cheap as it gets thrown away every time i chop the sump (3rd time now), so after this sump mod I'll treat it to
the proper stuff.
Volvosport I got on the phone to burton and I was told that a high pressure pump should put out 25/30psi.
It's getting my alarm bells ringing everytime I pull up to stop as i've fitted a 26psi warning light switch to try to save popping the
engine.

Are you sure about the high-pressure pump output? Mine generally gives me 65psi, dropping occasionally to around 45psi on tickover (they're
listed as 65psi in the Burtons catalogue). I would expect a standard pump to give 25/30psi, dropping a bit on tickover.
Apart from that, you could check that the pressure-relief valve isn't stuck (my occasional problem - I mean, the pump's problem... not
mine! ). If you don't know where it is, you'll see it if you remove the oil filter... it's a shiny cylinder that should be able
to slide sideways into the pump body (but not easily - there's a strong spring behind it).
I can't think of anything else... apart from serious big-end and/or main bearing wear, where they're letting oil out faster than the pump
can push it in. Any nasty rumbles at tickover?

You're right the pump does put out 4 bar at higher rpm's, (parallax error on my part)
There's no noises apart from tappet clearances that are just a might to large. I'd hope not as all the bearings are new.
I'll check the relief valve when i can next get to the car.
Many thanks Dan.
