Sierra Diffs/shafts
Question for Sierra Diff experts:
If I were to compare the two types of Sierra drive shafts side by side,
Apart from the circlip bit on the Lobro type shafts are the two types the same? Going from a photo I have of some Lobro shafts and some triploid
shafts I have, they certainly look the same.
Similarly, are the two diffs the same internally and would they therefore accept either type of shaft if the circlip bit is ignored.
TIA

Well no they're not the same - one is lobro and one tripode. Different types of CV joint. The lobros are bigger (in diameter) and the shafts
thicker. I believe the hub ends are different since the lobros are for disc brakes and the tripodes for drums.
The diff end is the same and yes, you can take out the flanges of a lobro diff and shove in tripode shafts, and vice versa. There are a few
exceptions...
There is a version of tripode diff/shafts that has entirely smaller splines inside the diff and hub. Cant remeber who recently brought this to light
but there is a thread with photos and stuff. I think these are quite rare and found on ultra old and/or super small engined (yes there was a 1300
sierra) cars.
LSDs are all for lobro shafts and have unequal length splines inside them. Whilst you can remove these flanges in the normal way, you
can't insert tripode shafts into an LSD.

You can however fit Lobro inner CV joints to tripode shafts and in this way use drum shafts with a bolt on diff.
Lobro CV joints are about £25 each
