Joels coolant goes KABOOM!

well, i ran the full trackday with no expansion tank, no pressure cap and no fan. It all worked perfectly (i put this down to the quality of the polo rad), until, at the end of the day, with the car on the trailer, the heatsoak got too much and a pipe exploded along its length I believe a working fan would've solved this, or a pressure cap.

Obviously my setup wasnt ideal, but it shows just how much abuse a good radiator can take. Overall im very happy really, lasted the day well and i now have a tidy short list of things that i can set about this month, should have a nice sorted car soon

Just thought id share that anyway

That nice cool air this time of year ramming in the front of the car probably helped while on the run,i went out for a blat this morning and didnt get much temperature at all which was nice.

Anyway i've got a stat switch on my fan but find an override switch works well to get the fan on earlier when in traffic, just a suggestion i'll go back to the bar now.

Nice one Joel, hope you enjoyed you day (great weather for it wasn't it ?) I got booted off Donington today for being too loud ! Still I got half the day in before they pulled me off. Seems like 115mph at 6500rpm odd = 99.1dB. It was a very quiet in the intermediate session I was in. There were only about ten cars (probably why it was easy to identify me as being too noisy !). Apparently they are now using sound meters all round the track not just on the start / finish straight, so you can't just back off at that point on the circuit.

Time to rethink my exhaust system I think (they said it was almost all exhaust noise ! Not long repacked the silencer either)

ahh well it was good while it lasted.

Did the rev counter start behaving or did you just rely on ears?

hi chaps

revcounter was spot on today, we can blame damp wires i guess. who knows!

GMTBH, thats a pisser, 99bDs! Damn quiet, im sure id fail that too. Are you off to the 29/12 one at donny? Paul was saying its unrestricted for noise then. Tempted!

Bob, you're quite right, was bloody freezing air today, must've helped somewhat.

I ended up with no pressure cap by accident really, the old micra rad had one in it, id finished the swap before i clicked that the polo rad didnt have one. But it lasted well enough. Previously had to top it up through the thermostat, but now im going to put a branch in the top hose and run an expansion tank.

Joel - was that at Rockingham Trackday?

We didn't know who you were... there may be some footage/pictures of you on track if you're lucky.

I'm waiting for two set's of in-car footage ( Tony/Paul) then I can finalize the video of the Rockingham Trackday.

We've got about 15 minutesworth of out-of-car footage between you both (Tony/Paul)- shame it was from only one viewpoint. Rockingham inner-field isn't too spectator friendly... though the paddock did manage to keep some of that blinding freezing air off! Noticed when I got back in the car it was 7.5C with the wind-chill that must have been down to 3-4C... very cold!!!!

Video soon chaps!

99dB quiet but not quiet enough. I know the silencer can make less that 97dB when freshly packed, however the noise level seems to very quickly rise especially when the car is thrashed (I guess the packing burns out faster than I thought).

I am investigating (see sep. post) "SUPERWOOL 607". Apparently doesn't burn out (rated to 1200 degrees).

29/12, if it's dry I should be on for it (Donington only being 15 mins away)

hi hellfire. I actually spent a fair while talking to hellfire senior - at least, he said he was! We had a right laugh about the state of my car

I hadnt realised you were there too, mine was the blue locost, i was in the same garage as tony and paul! Must've driven past you many times!

I had a major oil problem, i probably lost about a litre out of the breather neck over the course of the day - got a call over the tannoy asking for the owner of the leaking car to come forwards Bit of good advice from paul got it sorted well enough though

By the way, i still find it confusing that 3 of you post as hellfire!

GMTBH, might see you there then
