Pinto Ignition

I have a currently stock 1600 Pinto destined for my Locost. It has a standard webber that will be changed for either bike carbs or some side draught carbs. Currently I have a distributor from the normal webber engine with its module and another from an engine with a pirepoint carb with a vac feed to the electronics module. Which would be beter to use on my engine?

TIA

I would suggest changing the engine first to 2.0.

You will not be able to use a dizzy with a vacuum advance. The vac pipe needs to be attached to the manifold which feeds all four cylinders (single carb). If you try to attach it to a single cyinder feed (as in if you are using twin 40's, bike carbs etc) you will just get vacuum pulses which won't give you the required effect.

Have a read of this

http://hometown.aol.com/dvandrews/timing.htm

You can use an electronic dizzy (I think the one you have with the module) without the vacuum advance, but not the injection type wich has no mechanical advance - unless some one on here knows better by using MegaJolt for instance.

If you have a bosch points dizzy then that is a good starting point. you can get it modded at Aldon to provide a good non vac advance curve or do it your self as in Dave Andrews article above.

You will also be able to use the setup later when you convert to 2 litre - as Darren says the 2 litre is better.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Mark

Well I have only got two dizzzys both electronic. Both have different set ups both with vac one has a connection to the electronics module the other has a standard vac advance module.

I have played with springs before on my Rangie but that still has a vac advance. I was thinking a vac could be derrived from a nipple on each branch of the manifold each with a non return valve, there are lots on sierra engines.

Otherwise anyone got a points dizzy they don't want?

If either of your dizzys has mechanical advance (with springs and weights inside) you can use it. if they are just solid shaft ones then they are not going to be much good.

Read Dave Andrews article for how to make the mechanical advance work for you. you can just remove the vac unit from the side of the dizzy.

If you can find a way to make the Vac advance work as you describe, I'm sure we would all like to know about it.
