Exhaust joint question ...

I have a question regarding the application of exhaust clamps?

I need to clamp a 50mm/ 55mm sliding joint in a V6 collector box. The tubes are just clean cut – should I cut slots in the outer tube to improve clamping force or just use some HT gasket compound to take up the slack?
