ITG Air FIlters for Rover V8?
Hi folks,
I'm thinking of getting a pair of ITG air filters for the twin SU's on my Rover V8 and wondered if anyone had any experience of them. The
type I am talking about can be seen here:
I have heard stories about foam filters collapsing inwards but according to the manufacturer's website the type shown above has a stainless
steel band all the way around to prevent this so I'm hoping this problem only affected a different design of filter. I'm trying to get
hold of a drawing of the filter so if anyone knows where I can get the dimensions then please do tell...
Also, I'm thinking of just letting the filters stick out of the bonnet on either side of the car to avoid having to build a huge bonnet bulge.
Does anyone see any issues with this with regards to SVA? I would have thought that a foam filter would be even more SVA friendly than a K&N but
I've not actually touched an ITG filter so I'm not sure if they have any hard parts exposed or any sharp edges.
I would be covering my SU carbs down the middle of the bonnet with a bit of GRP or perhaps aluminium because I think the SU carbs would fail SVA for a
number of reasons. Has anyone ever tried to get exposed SU carbs past SVA before?
Thanks,
Craig.

Right,
Firstly I would ALWAYS use K+N filters unless there is a reason not to!
if you are poking them out of the bonnet then I guess that might be a valid reason as I am not sure whether the edges of the K+N's would pass
SVA.
I have used a pair of K+N cones though on a rover before.
Having run a car on the rolling road with ITG foam filters vs K+N filters the difference is huge!! Yes, the springs will stop the foam filter pulling
in, but you have to ask why it pulls is to start with!?? It pulls in because it creates a big pressure difference which is because it is restrictive.
The pressure drop across K&N filters is tiny by comparison.
Having said all that I am using a huge ITG sausage filter on the throttle bodies because K&N filters sticking out of the bonnet will have a load
of sharp edges to make sva more fun (plus I happen to have the ITG laying about!!)
Retro RWD is the way forward...........automotive fabrication, car restoration, sheetmetal work, engine conversion
retro car restoration and tuning

Craig,
I have an ITG sausage filter, yet to run the engine but it does have a steel mesh on the inside to stop the foam pulling/distorting.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Yes, having used K&N's before on my old mini I know how good they are although I'm surprised to hear that ITG filters are not good for
performance. Performance isn't a major problem right at this moment to be honest since the V8 will more than push me along even if it is down
10BHP or so. In fact my exhaust system will probably gain more than this over standard to begin with. Once I get through SVA and save up a bit I want
to get a Weber 500 kit and I'll probably get a big chrome pancake K&N for it then.
Anyone out there able to confirm if K&N filters can be made to pass SVA if exposed through the bonnet?
Cheers,
Craig.

I asked about this; flters poking out through bonnet and it seems it a bit a a lucky dip.

Maybe I should give my likely SVA test venue a call and see what the thoughts of the tester's are then. Personally I don't see why it
should be an issue if all sharp edges are covered or padded properly and I think this is more likely to be achieved (or at least more easily) with ITG
filters than with K&N's.
As an aside, I'm not all that keen on a pair of chromed K&N's sticking through the bonnet, I never did go in for all that
"bling" stuff...
Cheers,
Craig.
