vauxhall frontera
OT i know, but i really hope someone can help.
it's my uncle's frontera he's just bought. basically, he went out for a drive the other day, and out in the sticks, it just cut out
on him.
after a call to the rac, they came out, and couldn't get it running, but suggested it was probably the coil as it wasn't making a spark.
the first thing we replaced was the coil, which didn't cure it, then HT leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, and plugs, but still no joy.
we've also changed the crank sensor, admittedly not for a new one, but for one that was working the last time the engine it came from was run.
we had a similar thing with a '91 1.6 cavalier with spi and an ignition module, but afaik, the 2.0 with mpi does'nt have an ignition
module, just the ecu.
so basically, we've hit a brick wall, as i don't profess to be any expert on electronic ignition, and my dad and uncle's experience
is based largely round points. is it likely to be an ecu fault at this rate, or is it something more obvious? i just can't see why it's
not making a spark
btw, it's the 2.0 8v engine, the c20ne iirc.
someone, anyone, heeeeeeeeelp. i want a good nights sleep!

Fingers crossed it isnt the same problem, but the last Frontera that I has experience with that did this, turned out to be an immobiliser fault. A
mobile vehicle electronics specialist spent two days on it, and he couldnt get it going either...
First and foremost, have you checked all of the fuses?
Trace the diagnostics plug, join the relevant pins together, and see if there are any faults recorded. If nothing there, you really need go back to
the ECU and start from there. But to do that, you are going to need wiring info. Is there power getting to the ECU? Decent earths for the ECU (and
engine, for that matter)? If this checks out fine, you will need to get more in-depth, checking the various sensors inputs and outputs for expected
readings. Easy enough, with patience and the right info...
Dont just build it.....make it!

cheers stu,
as far as i'm aware, it doesn't have an immobiliser. it doesn't have an alarm fitted, and it's not got any kind of
electrickery on the key - it's a plain metal one, not even the standard vauxhall plastic top.
will get my dad onto checking the ecu on the morrow.
btw, it's on a '93 plate if that makes any difference, especially if someone should happen to have some wiring diagrams nudge,
nudge
i just need to get my dad off this job, so he can carry on clearing the garage out. i can then get both cars in when the new build commences.
cheers

Most garages try and remove / disable 3rd party alarms before reselling a vehicle.
If they can disable it, they just leave it plumbed in so could still disable the engine...

It will prob have a standard alarm which just works off the door lock.
The unit for this is about 10cm square and connects into everything and does have the ability to amobilise the car.

All v/halls of that age seemed to suffer from fuel pump relay failure, I had 2 on my Carlton 91plate and know of many others with the same. Basically
the pump only runs when the relay gets a pulse from the ecu ort ign so that in the event of a crash and engine stall the fuel does not keep being
pumped out causing a fire.
It.s worth checking out and prolly around the £25 for a new one.
Sorry just re read your post and what I've just said is shoite if your not getting a spark.
