Ford DOHC 2L engine

Been offered one of these brand new for £200 including fuel injection and flywheel, but no loom etc. (Old race team getting rid of spare engines - they actually have to get rid of)

Any problems fitting one to a standard MK chassis with ST bodywork? If it fits will scrap the FFord 1600 Xflow plan (anyone want one?)

It will go in the MK Indy chassis but i fear it may be a bit tall and possible a tad wide for the standard book chassis.

When i say wide it may just be the inj system as its been a problem for pinto inj fitting.

I'm sure this question has been asked before though,maybe a search might throw up some anwsers.

James If you do scrap the ford engine idea I need a 1600 sump if you have one spare? .I know you also were looking for one at one time

If I remember correctly from questions asked in Cars And Car Conversions magazine about this lump, hardly anybody/nobody makes tuning parts for it so it will either be DIY or live with it as it is, unless anyone knows different?

..it'll go pretty fast as is...

Its always nice to have the potential though, isn't it? I understand that the engine is not lacking in this particular quarter, it's just that as far as I know the aftermarket tuning companies haven't rushed to produce off-the-shelf goodies for it (cams, manifolds etc). This is just my opinion however so don't let me put you off!

These engines are 150BHP as standard - you could port the head yourself (easier than you might expect). I'm sure one of the cam people would make you up custom cams if necessary, but you do need two so it wouldnt be cheap.

Couple of big carbs rather than FI might increase things a bit.

Still, 150 is quite a bit for a little car - a Westie I had a few years ago was very rapid with only a 1600 XFlow with about 120bhp.

No they aren't

The DOHC produces 105 BHP with the standard carb and 125-ish with injection.

You can get cams for them; I asked an engine specialist (can't remember the naem but I have a link at home if anyone's interested). He said it costs twice as much cam wise because (obviously) there are two cams.

I think the real problem is getting an inlet manifold to take bigger carbs - I am not sure if anyone makes them.

Try Vulcan Engineering.

They do a manifold to let you fit carbs to an injection head for the Pinto so may do one for the DOHC. It's £87 plus vat though!

Hmm. Guy selling them said 150 - but he may have meant after all the tweaking of course.

105 off 2 litres is pretty pants though. I get 135 out of my standard 1600 Rover (well, Honda) engine.

the pinto 2 litre carb give 105 hp
the efi gives 115

and the dohc gives 125 with efi.

thats not too bad for a late 80s 2 litre.

This is the engine i'm fitting in my standard "book" chassis.
They have had a bad press,but if they are looked after they are a solid engine.
The payback is indeed in the torque:
Pinto 2l inj= 160Nm@4000rpm
DOHC2l inj=174Nm@2500rpm
In a car as light as we are building, this bottom end grunt makes for a v. tractable
vehicle

Not made the bonnet or scuttle yet.
but its not as tall as everyone thinks.
i've shortened the sump by just over 1".
the overall height is now less than a pinto
at 23" ( i believe the pinto is around 24"?)
The engine is out of the chassis at the moment as i'm working on the front suspension mounts(NIGHTMARE!! such clear & concise instructions in the book)
As i have aquired the lolocost +1" nose I don't plan to have a bulge (oh..err!)
when the engines back in i will post some pics
