Engineers! Starter motor to ring gear engagement depth?...

Hi there - calling all experienced engineers, custom car builders...

I'm at the stage of finally mounting my starter motor to my adaptor plate. So I can choose how close a mesh i have between my starter pinion and the ring gear, but I'm wondering what's best.

Obviously to far apart and only the tips of the teeth will mesh and wont last very long. But should i aim to get the mesh as close as possible, or will this prevent easy engagement of the pinion and just have my pinion slapping the ring gear most of the time? Will too close a mesh prevent the pinion retracting properly? Or will this not be a problem and I should get the pinion meshing as close as possible?

If anyone has any experience setting up this particular relationship, any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Liam

Woah so you mean the gears only just in mesh? Or did your card concertina up a lot? I've got my adaptor plate and flywheel setup on my engine with the starter clamped in place. I've got the mesh set up pretty close at the mo, and it usually takes a few clicks of the soloniod before the pinion bashes in place, which dont seem right - should engage every time. So maybe i need the mesh looser than seems intuitive? Just worried about damaging teeth...

Cheers for the help anyway,

liam

The card thing sounds about right, i have used rizzlers before now, if u can run it through the gears without damaging it its at about the right amount of mesh. sorry if that doesn't make any sense. Admittably this was for an RC car, but the basic principle applies!
