Flushing out and refilling with the correct grade oil may help, Some of the oil additives may help

Unless is a very early model or the engine is gunged up very badly unlikely to be a tappet --- You could try flushing with some of the oil additives specially designed to remove gum & varnish from hydraulic tappets alternatively 500 mll of Auto trans fluid as a flushing agent also sometimes works.

Unless this cures the problem it really should be investigated properly.

Start by taking the cam cover off and check the oil is getting through and look for any scoring on the cams.

Also not unkown for the alternator drive bracket bush to work loose (Lucas alternator) or a slack crank pulley on these engines to make a very similar sound. Check cam belt tension and general condition of tensioner, belt and covers..
If there is any chance the engine might have been over revved by getting the the wrong gear on a downshift do a compresion test or better still a cylinder leak down test to show up any bent valves.

And these engines like good quality "thin" oil --- never anything more viscous than 10w/40 better still 5w/40, 0w/40 or 5w/30.

how early is early? its on a g plate we have had it several years, and its been serviced regularly
reading the haynes manual, the later ones had modified tappets, but it dont say how late!

G as in 1989 -- makes it one of the first 214 made. I have some tappets in the garage but they are also the old type.
