Which Zetec?

I've already bought an MT75 gearbox which I am going to mate to a 2.0 Zetec.

I've also bought some Fireblade carbs and all the components for a Mega Jolt although this hasn't been assembled.

The original intention was to get a pre 1995 engine to avoid all the emmissions issues but any that I've found are either in really poor condition (at least externally) or expensive, just because the seller knows they're what's needed for a kit car build.

I'm now considering abandoning the carbs and Mega Jolt to go for a later Black Top engine but this means I'll need an aftermarket ECU (Mega Squirt?) and presumably a cat.

What's the general feeling on this?

Aint much to rebuild a zetec!

Anyway - get it running, get it through the SVA on a PRE 95 engine - if it blows up - replace with blacktop...

Silver tops are cheap.

Try here here

They offered me a 2litre with low miles and ancilleries for 150 quid which isnt out of the way.

Engines often look rough on the outside but are perfect on the inside. A lick of paint soon solves the problem. MIne looked rough as before i steamed it and painted it.

Remeber zetecs are good for 200k.

I thought black top will not bolt to the earlier gearboxes (sierra/escort) whereas silver top will.

I have a blacktop and it bolted straight to a type 9, don't all the old Ford gearboxes have the same bolt pattern?

Hi Mark,

Yup they do ;-)

I'm registering mine - if it goes bang - a black top will replace it.

The only engine that doesn't fit - is the Duratec - perhaps 02GF74 is getting confused with them

Cheers

M

Bought my silver top 2.0L from donor spares as in link above. 75k miles £125 last year. Happy with it so far.
My understanding is they are bl00dy expensive to re-build. Much cheaper to buy another.

Well ive spent £500-£600 on alternator, starter, cam belt and brackets and bits and pieces already for the black top zetec, plus you need a water rail, pinto flywheel, pinto clutch, x/flow thermo housing and a few other bits and bobs

Built, Ivaed, Drove and now Sold - 2011 MNR VORTX RT+ 2000cc Zetec on R1 Throttle boddies.
