Vx Red Top?
I have been offered a VX XE20 engine and wiring loom, the guy wants £350, but i reckon i could knock £100 of that, so at £250 would that represent a
good deal?
I havent managed to see the car yet, but apparently it has a fault with the immobiliser which stops it from starting....sound dubious? Is there a
simple bypass so that i can hear the engine running?

You can pick them up for £200 complete on eBay (2 on there for £200 BIN atm), just carriage is a pain.
Best bet may be to look for a 16v Cav, Cally, Astra, so at least you can test drive the engine, unless you are planning a complete rebuild, clutch etc
as a matter of course.
16v Cav can be as cheap as an engine alone for an MOT failure. Cally is a bit more and Astra more again.

Albertz I looked in the scot ads for a month for one of these and no joy. Placed a wanted ad in the same paper and had 4 or 5 calls in a week and
finally bought a whole car for £175 (albeit rattly tappets). I still know of one locally that the guy wanted £200 for a complete GSI but it's
had the gearbox semi stripped and the bottom ball joints split so it's pretty much immovable some of the KandL plate sri's have
this engine as well.
Good luck.

All depends on condition, I have 4 XE engines and have paid between £150 and £750 for them.
The £750 one was guaranteed, 23,000 miles from a stolen and crashed Cav GSI which I bought in 1996 (they were less common then!)
the cheapest was bought unknown and from an astra GTE 16v (F plate one) and was worth £150 in spares as it had a coscast head. Turns out the valve
guides are chipped as a result of soem bent valves (the valves were replaced but not the guides) and the head gasket had blown following the
work.....................
As I say, all depends on condition.
You'll always get somebody saying "you can get them for 5.7p on ebay" or some such crap, but "most" of those ebay motors
which are out of the car have something to hide!! Always buy one from either a trusted source or one still in a car so you can hear it run.
If there is some excuse as to why it won't run, it could well be a cover for the fact that if you run it the water quickly becomes full of oil!!
not uncommon on these engines!
Just my point of view.
Better to spend a couple of hundred more on a known good engine than to scrimp for the sake of £100 and have to chuck it and get another!!

What is stripped on the gearbox?? They don't really "semi strip" on these, the cluster just pulls out in one lump!
Re the SRI, beware, K plate SRI's can be 8 valve or 16v, and at L reg they can be 8valve seh engine, 16v XE engine or 16v Ecotec, many
XE's with black plug covers that say ECOTEC on them! Just look for the L shaped cover and you know its an XE, even if its black and says
ecotec!!

Re the gearbox is stripped NS DEV
It needed a new clutch and the box is split from the engine and the balljoints split ready to remove the shafts and then the numpties got suck and
lifted it with a forklift into the corner of a muddy parking area and left it.
