Engine oil level???

Engine is pinto. Head refurbed 900 miles ago (1mm skim, guides, stem seals, new cam, ported). Bottom end approx 90K miles - std and untouched.

Dip stick has a small notch near bottom - assumed to be lower level mark, and a constriction higher up (round nit rather than the flat area_ - assumed to be the top level mark.

Sump is modified so oil capacity is unknown.

Last 2 times ive toped up ive gone to what i assume to b top level mark on stick (amaybe couple of mm's above). On a hard run i have observed some blue smoke being ejected when i change gear - and i mean taking it to the red line here.
Is this a symptom of overfilling the sump? i have noticed it more when going round corners hard or pulling out of T-junctions.

Driving normally is clean.
Emissions test yesterday showed 2.6% CO and 400HC so im convinced it is not normally burning oil. Hence why im wondering if ive overfilled a touch but why would i get the quick puff of smoke when changing gear on hard driving?

The usual routine for oil level with a shortened sump is to use the standard manufacturers dipstick and markings. This keeps the oil level at the same distance below the block and thus crank. When shortening a sump the oil capacity below the dip line will be reduced and it is usual to replace this capacity by extending the sump forwards or sideways.
The puffs of smoke on changing gear are likely to be valve guide or seal wear. Oil gets sucked down the inlets when the manifold vacuum jumps when the throttle is slammed shut. When you power up to accelerate away this oil is 'sucked' in and burnt producing a puff of smoke for a second or two. May be worse if your oil capacity is reduced and thus hotter and thinner than usual. Overfilling usualy smokes pretty much all the time, and throughout acceleration.

Id be surprised if it is upper end wear as the head has undergone an extensive rebuild very recently.

When sump was shortened i extended it forward and baffled it. From empty it took one can (4.5l) to fill it to the top of the upper mark.

During normal driving all is well. As i say its only when driven ver hard that i get a quick uff on changing gear. It did it last time i filled up then gradually stopped and just started again when i refilled 2 nights ago. This is why i suspect overfilling but have no real experience.

Ive just flushed and refilled coolant system. Ran engine up to temp to gt air locks out. When hot i give it some good hard throttles and sure enough saw the exhaust. It was a touch oily but didnt smell like it was truly burning oil. Im getting convinced that ive overfilled and on the road the surge is allowing the crank to slap it about a bit. If experience rings true again in a few miles it will stop doing it.
Note to self - only fill to a couple of mm's bekow the top level.

Whenever I do an oil change on mine, I overfill it!
This gives tha same symptoms as you are experiencing. Drain some out!
