Although they look much better without i'd say put it back on,

I once dropped a bolt in that area and daren't start the car up until I found it because the pulleys were exposed....
and sure enough the bolt was trapped in/behind the crank pulley and a gear

Could have been a very expencive mistake!

Small pebbles ect make a mess of your valves when they get in between the pulley n belt, leave them on.

I say off but then I have a non interference engine. If its going to risk valve damage from a thrown belt then covers on or make up some very fine perferated steel ones and chrome them.

I will have no cambelt cover as I can't get the 8mm extra height in under the bonnet!

HOWEVER!!!!!!

NEVER use a part cover or a cover with holes in!!!

With NO cover, stones tend to get flicked out from whence they came, and with a FULL cover then don't get in to start with, but with a PART cover, they can get in and then not get out again.

As an example, with the vauxhall XE engine, a lot of people remove the front cambelt cover but leave the black steel rear cover in place (because you need to remove all the pulleys etc to remove it)

This leaves a nice trough to catch stones and hold them against the cambelt.

Also I have seen covers with holes cut to expose the pulleys, not a good idea at all as again, stones can get in and not out!
