Cam belt replacement

Hi there all,

I've just installed my cam belt on my silver top 2l ZETEC (nearly there!)

I'm a bit confused about belt tension. I ahve a Haynes but am not convinced the instructions are exactly right.

I find TDC via the crank pulley alignment and install a 5mm bar to lock the cams. Install the belt with the tensioner free to move under the tensioning spring. The pulleys are now set (using a special locost tool ) next bit causes the problem: It says turn ebgine over twice (back to TDC) and then tighten the tensioner bolt. But if the tensioner bolt is loose at this point the belt has already sliped as at TDC the pulleys want to rotate towards one another creating slack!!!

I've just tightened the tensioner while roatating the crank pulley whent heres resistance. But I'm worried my tension might be wrong.

Sorry about the war and peace just panicky as I want to rev with confidence later and make use of those arp bolts

Any advice gratefully received!

Charlie

there are loads of ways people do these !

HAVE YOU REPLACED THE ROLLERS?

i would nip up the bolt.(remove the s/plug ease of turning )
spin the engine 2 turns
make sure all timing marks line up !
undo the tensioner, then fasten it up spin it round 2 times check again (TIMING MARKS)

on the longest side of the belt ( free movement ) twist the belt you should be able to twist it just under 90 degrees
if all timing marks line up the build the engine back up
!

and REPLACE your timing covers

Thanks for your replies, and so quickly!

I'll do as you say as long as I know the tension is right I'm happy. Getting the notches in the cams to line up is a B#*%$ They are sprung in opposite directions at the top so they always seem to need adjusting to fine tune it after setting it up.

I'll continue with confidence!

Thanks!

have you locked the camshafts up?

once they are locked you undo the bolts on front of the pullys and they spin round free so no problems with lining them up (you may have to tap them)

Yeah I have locked them but as I said at TDC the cams are trying to rotate because of the valve springs. This means that locking bar is tight in there, and when removed the cams move the belt a little. I'm sure its not enough to really worry about but it will always be enough to make the locking bar difficult to put back in...
