The old chestnut of engine Nrs

I have a Pinto that i bought from Vulcan engineering.

I am going to write to Ford for a letter of authentication on the age of the block but my question is where is the engine number ?

there is a 7 number and 1 letter code stamped into the block near the distributer.

there is a 5 digit code cast into the block just above the 205 code. (all numbers)

there is a code 85HM6015BB cast into the block just below the 205 code

to the rear of the block below the exhaust there appears to be a date cast into the block 260587. which of these is the block number?

I think it is the stamped code is this correct?

do the other codes give any suggestion on the date if the engine?

this is all too confusing for a simple sole like me

Theres a picture of my block here:

Next to the engine mount is a load of cast in numbers. These are the casting numbers for the block. The two letter date code is located this code.

Directly above these is a machined face with some numbers/letters stamped on. This is the engine number.

Cheers,
David

my block looks nothing like that

i have a block that has

*****
205
85HM6015BB

where your cast numbers are (adjacent to the alternator)

the date at the back of the block

and a machined plate behind the distributor on the other side of the block. which has 8 digits (7 numbers and one letter)

would i be corret to assume that the engine number is always stamped onto the block not cast?

Yes its always stamped into the block.

The numbers are similar to mine. From that casting code you gave, and the burtons catalogue your engine is a November 1987 engine. (Code HM)

I seem to remember most people just showng the burton power catalogue casting code date table as proof of age for pintos.

I have no V5 or anything for proof of age for mine either...
