Thernodynamicists - help!

Quick q re a theory I have.

I'm tubo'ing my R V8 and have a massive(?) lack of space. I'm gonna use a couple of R5 GT intercoolers.

Is there a reason why I can't have my inlet airflow through the intercooler matrix. As revs increase, so will airflow etc etc.

Thanks

ATB

Simon

I dont know but if it does not restrict your intake I dont see why not. You definately have me thinging about it now as my Intercooler and intake are rather close together.
- Just had a second thought about that though.
As you are pushing boost the charge cooler is going to be getting hot and that is going to raise your intake temp which is going to be compressed and get your IC hotter which is going to raise your intake temps ect. Sounds like it could be meltdown time - well maybe not but probably would lead to detination.

dont do it.
the intake will get hotter and more restrictive both of which are bad, the post charger temps will be higher and the turbo will have to work harder which will increase back pressure so reducing efficency.

i tried to work it out properly but gave up because its way to complicated to map out on an h-s diagram.

Or you might just consider supercharging instead?

No -- for pretty obvious reasons this will entirely defeat the purpose of having an intercooler in the first place.

I don't know if this helps but I am looking at putting my intercooler behind the engine just above the transmission tray. Using a long hood scoop that is kind of a close fit around the top of the valve cover to try and stop letting hot air get into it and using that forced air through the IC and venting out the side(s) so its not effected by the hi pressure area in front of the windscreen/deflector.
In front of the rad is the best place but does not work in my situation.

Cheers for the U2U - think I see what you mean.

Having been in touch with BS iro MS, he suggested to just go for water injection, so I may do that instead.

Alki injection is not a whole lot more work. Just have to not let it get too rich. You can also just sray the outside of the ic to cool at a certain boost level.

Most of the point of an intercooler is to reduce the temp increase induced by the turbo, so you really need the 'cooler after the turbo. If it's before it will cool the air slightly, but only for the turbo to then raise the temp by a silly amount. Thus wasting time, and indeed, effort.
