Engine build oil

Can anyone reccomend which engine build oil to use. The engine i'm building will be built over a good few months so i would rather not use normal engine oil.

Graphogen ? should be able to get it from your engine parts suppliers. Although not oil it is more like grease that is formulated for assembling engines .

I used to use an oil can with some engine oil and STP mixed when putting things together and I never had any problems.

MPZ ENGINE ASSEMBLY LUBE,

Building a V8 like you over a few months- The above seems to stick like glue to the bearings

used cam shaft lube on cam and graphogen on cylinder walls and rings

got all from Burton Power

I would not worry as its a v8 rover.

Before you try starting it in a few months simply pluck out the distributor and make a rod (bit of tube with the end hammered oval usually does the trick) to drive the oil pump with an electric drill.

You can then force oil everywhere before you start it, it can be a bugger to prime these engines (vaseline required around the pump gears), I have seen people destroy new engines as the pump will not self prime, doing this makes you 100% sure its working.

You also need to be careful when using thick oil/building grease with RV8's as the oil galleries feed everything from the front (rockers, cam/followers, Crank in parrellel), anything heavy can easily block the small drillings as pressure at the rear of the engine is low. Vasline is used to pack the pump as it disolves quickly and melts with mild heat.

If you're fitting new rings and have the block honed just wipe a coat of thin machine oil over the bores to stop them rusting. Lubricating the bores will stop the rings bedding in properly.

I poured a bit of gear oil into the oil pump when fitting and spun the engine up to full oil pressure with a drill on the oil pump before starting.

Use Graphogen on all shell bearings & cams, use engine oil on pistons ,rings & bores. Fill filters, coolers & oil galleries as much as possible with oil, turn over engine minus plugs to build pressure before starting. It is generally advisable to use a simple mineral oil for running in & switch to fully synthetic after the rings have had a chance to bed in.
