Bellhousing modification.

I'm using a 309Gti engine for my Locost and was staring at the engine last night until about 0200hrs in the morning, I think it might be possible to create a plate that mounts to the engine with the original bolts and then line up the gearbox and mount that to the plate with the original bolts from it, I will use a 5sp box from a Ford, if anyone has done this or knows it will work it would be great for the advice, Cheers, new Locoster.

when using an additional plate won't the input shaft have to be longer? to take up the thickness of the adapter plate?

otherwise get a full bellhousing made up that should fit exactly?

Bellhousing modification

I suppose I'll have to wait untill i come across the gearbox from somewhere then see what has to be done, I was hoping the ford gearbox shaft prodruded to far and then create the plate to give it the correct fitment, cheers my friend for info, I,ll go full bellhousing redesign route, lot safer.

best plan IMO, I'm using a vauxhall 2ltr, attached to ford type 9 (or will be when I've picked it up!)

The vauxhall is often used for transplants into mk2 escorts for rallying - yukspeed for example sell a bellhousing to suit this engine off the shelf I believe. saves adapter plates, input shafts, extra set of bolts round the bell housing etc etc.

Engines

I had a 2ltr astra GTE and for a hatch back weighing nearly a 1000kilos it was fast, I think in a Locost weighing about 550kilos that will be neck renching fast especially with rear wheel drive grip on accelaration, that's why I've gone 309Gti route since I have the car in the garage, very relliable and alloy engine, nice. I found the old ford engines heavy and cost a lot to tune, I dont know about the vauxhall engine for tuning but the peugeot one has the largest valves in standard form than any other make I think. I'll give Yukspeed a try. Cheers.
