How many of you??

Hey all, first post on this forum. Have been meaning to build a locost for a while now. BIn dreaming a lot whilst had a lot on my hands

Anyway. Done a little bit of forum trolling and seems like most of you are using the ford x-flow engine in your locost, am i right? Anyway i was seriously considering the 4age into the locost. Good sound base of some sweet power.

How many of you have actually put the engine in there. I have seen a few pics of them on here but really keen to see more and learn of some of the down falls etc.

Went for my first ride in a locost and of course a fraser about a week ago.... OO the acceleration Really keen now ahaha. Will be maknig it all myself, like most of you, so it should be really fun.

Cheers Guys

Not as many x-flows as you think - many are using the Ford Pinto from the Sierra, or Zetecs from Mondeos. There are several using the Toyota 4-AGE - I believe that it's popular in Oz because it can be set up to pass the stringent laws there. There are also a fair number of V8s, mostly the Rover one as it's fairly light and very tunable.

Other than that, there are a lot of bike engines in the UK as they give heaps of power for very little weight, and they come with a sequential gearbox. The downside is there's no reverse.

To put it bluntly, you can fit whatever you can squeeze in, as long as it meets your local laws!

Have fun,
David

good luck with your build, go for the 4age you know it makes sence

Thanks for the replys. Here in NZ we dont have engine size restrictions etc but have to deal with the land transport guys. When you say ae86 gearbox, thats the t50 is it not ? and wouldnt a 4age with an escort diff just get obliterated when you try put some ponies through it? I wouldnt know how strong they are so im asking (im a nissan/datto man ) How strong are the sierra gearboxs anyway? able to withstand 250hp ?? just interested in options. Cheers
Chris
