Engine number
Daft question - where's the engine number on Ford 1600 x-flow

Not so daft - many people have asked the same thing!
look at the junction between the block and the cylinder head on the exhaust side. You should see a lug on the block, about 75mm long and 10mm wide.
This should have the engine number on it, in the form XXnnnn, e.g. WL12345 or similar.
If the head's been skimmed at any time then this lug may not have a number on it any more - decent engine shops would restamp the number
somewhere else - usually on one of the gearbox mounting webs.
