Help ID Type 9
I have read a number of posts describing various Type 9 gearboxes, but am still trying to determine which one I have. It is from a Merkur XR4Ti in
Canada and, as close as I can tell, it may be a non-HD box, but with the V6 ratios (3.36 1st gear). See photo:

Also, it seems to have a long input shaft, but it seems to be even longer than that which has been referenced in the threads I have seen. The
following image shows a measurement with the "guide sleeve" removed and the tape placed on the front of the actual gearbox housing:
Input Shaft
When measuring with the guide sleeve installed, the shaft is about 184mm long when measured from the flat edge on the guide sleeve.
Can anyone help identify the specifics of this box?
Thanks,
Shaun

Also, can someone please quickly measure the diameter of the guide sleeve for me? I have something in writing saying that it is normally 1.324"
(33.6mm). However, mine measures around 36.5mm, so I am wondering if this is another difference in this gearbox.
Thanks!

Just measured mine and it's definately 33.6mm diameter. That's from a UK 2.0L Sierra.
Yours doesn't look like a heavy duty box as it doesn't have the extended boss on the end of the layshaft.
Out of interest what sort of power/torque did the XR4Ti make ?

Aha! Thanks, Mike. This helps explain why I can't use the hydraulic clutch conversion that I got from Caterham USA.
To install their kit, part of the instructions call for the guide sleeve to be machined down to accept the 30mm ID of the release bearing.
Unfortunately, with the larger OD of the guide sleeve on this 'box, I assume there also comes a larger ID, = 29mm. Therefore, if I machine it
to fit the release bearing, there would only be 1mm of material left across the diameter of the guide sleeve, or .5mm all around!
Based upon the larger ID of the guide sleeve, I am assuming that the input shaft of this box must be larger than the standard type 9. I did some
testing last night and also found that the shaft is a few mm too long to use with the Caterham US bellhousing, although it looks like it could easily
be shortened enough to work.
Any more thoughts or opinions?
Mike, the XR4Ti ran a 2.3 Lima Turbo, rated at 175hp @ 5200rpm and 195lb-ft @ 3800rpm. With a car of this weight and power, the gearbox was certainly
an area of concern. Many have transplanted T5s into these cars.
Thanks for the info.

Can anyone help me sort out if my guide sleeve, being of larger OD is also of larger ID? If possible, please measure the ID of the 33.6mm guide
sleeve and let me know what it is.
Thanks for all your help!
