Propshaft

Done some work on the Car today, and as im off next week, was going to get the metal to make the Propshaft.

Decided following a discussion with my dad that im going to swap to a Sierra Shaft, as im not sure on the state of the UJ's on my Escort prop, but i am wondering if the splines and flange are the same?

I think whether the Sierra flanges are compatible depends on what box and axle you are using. If you already have an Escort prop and you are using Escort running gear this must be your best bet. Renewing the UJ spider is straighforward and not costly and then you would know that the UJs are good. You can make a new propshaft from the Escort one. First mark with a scribed line the alignment of the UJ with respect to the shaft and hence the UJ at the other end. All you need do is to saw through the shaft about half an inch from the weld joining the UJ at the gearbox end. If you then put the UJ in the lathe you can turn off the remains of the propshaft tube and this will reveal a spigot on the UJ that is a tight fit in the propshaft tube. Cut the shaft to length and insert the front UJ spigot into the tube making sure your scribed lines line up. Simply weld round and hey presto a custom made propshaft.

I have made several in this way and none has failed or needed balancing.
