Renault 5 Engines

I reckon a Renault 5 - 1.4 (or for that matter turbo) engine would be nice for a Locost.

Anyone know of a gearbox to 'turn it around' with?

id guess rwd volvo? 5s often get upgraded with the 1.7 volvo engine, something about same mounts i think my pal was saying, so the box probably fits. Then again, i can think of much better ways to get 120bhp!

Yes its compatible with the Volvo box but that's a transaxle arrangement. No good for Locost.

It's really just that these engines are easily comeby and easy to work on, tune etc. And they are reliable and definitely not sluggish!

good choice of engine , but a 2 litre zetec would fulfill that role , and be much more reliable .

of course a proper volvo engine could be used , and that would be that

as far as i know the volvo bits are the same, i think one of them is a rwd car the 340??

The engine can b tuned to 160-180 bhp on standard internals, and the mod scene is looking at 250 ish at the moment. over that they tent to go pop alot. But the engine is heavy being cast iron.

had mine at 160 bhp and 180 Ibft on the standard T2 turbo. never missed a beat until i met a tree comming the other way.

Sorry about my spelling, im an engineer and only work in numbers.

Bloody trees ought to be banned from the road

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Pesky trees they get everywhere.

Those engines are quick. The 1.7 gtx engines are quick to but theyl all be getting a bit tired now and will probably need rebuilding.

2.0 zetec, carbs and magajolt will give u the same power and much easier to do and maybe cheaper.
