Bugger x2

Recent work on the X has unearthed a crack in the front offside upright where the bottom ball joint bolts on Managed to get some pics this afternoon, its about 10mm long and seems to go right through the bottom ball joint mounting area:

Rather scary to think i was driving (rather hard sometimes!) with the upright in that state. Looking for a new one this week, im assuming its not worth trying to repair?

Also got a mysterious problem with the valve timing. The head was rebuilt last year with new gaskets, belts, seals, head skim and valves reground. We then did about 1500 miles over the summer and finally dried her out in the garage. When I came to restart her, the timing had slipped 3 or 4 teeth. I assumed this had happened on the first crank when the engine was a bit tight. We then replaced the belt again and reset the timing, problem solved I thought. No, it's just happened again! Timing is retarded 3 teeth (like the cam is sticking and the belt skips on..) What is going on? I blamed the tensioner but this has been removed and appears to be fine. Anyone else ever encountered this problem?

Hope you lot had a more productive weekend,

Iain - making progress in the wrong direction.

If you can't find one, let me know as my local yard has an x1/9 in!
