First time out
hi all, My locost hit the track yesterday at a track zone day. Pretty good really with no major problems, but I have noticed a couple of problems.
1. When coming out of the Melbourne hairpin and accerlerating away the engine seemed to flutter as if a petrol problem from the carb?.
2. When cornering with high speed and sharp turns there is a high pitch screech/grind sound coming from the transmission area, I am not sure if
it's the back of the gearbox or the back axle. The gearbox is a reconditioned one, the diff came off a contact but it was dry and slightly
rusty as it had been out the car for some time. New halfshaft bearings were fitted. any thoughts anyone!!.
Regards Steve Evans.

If its a pinto, my mates alternator fans just catch the framework when doing left high speed turns.
Thank's, Joe

Both realy common problems You need another diff is the usual answer to the second problem - 30 year old Escort diffs quite often aren't up
to race type speeds for long!
The first problem is often caused by either a lack of baffling in the petrol tank or it can be carb related (loose emulsion tubes and/or accelerator
pump wear are to areas to check especialy if the engine hesitates on the transition between the primary and secondary venturies opening) If it only
happens on or after tight/long corners and you don't have any baffling in your tank that would be the first thing to look at.......

Hi the fuel problem could be either a tank prob- has it got baffels or a sump type pick up- witch side of the tank is the pickup on as it needs to be
on the left passenger side . Or the carb has is ever been rejetted to suit the application as a road jetted carb will not work and could possably
burn a piston out or has been seen to melt the end of the plug wich then drops of and scraps the piston and bore of the block. And have you checked to
see what pressure you have got at the carb on the fuel line 3-4 psi is about right any more and you will force to much in and flood the carb.
As regards the noise couldent really help unless i had it in my hands as it could be allsorts of things such as alt pully diff g/box propshaft hitting
tunnel ECT. Have a look and see if you can see any areas that have been marked or chaffed by anything.

The easiest way to check if it is fuel tank baffling would be to fill the tank right up. Even under the hardest cornering, a full fuel tank will
still have plenty of fuel over the outlet pipe.

The tank take off point is bottom left the fuel pump is at the back next to it, the regulator is mounted on the flat part next to the scuttle where
most people have fitted the coil. I have used 3/8 braided hose all the way through. The tank is as supplied by ST and it does have a baffle but with
the take off on the left and a right handed corner all the fuel would go left!. I have set the regulator to 3 psi.
I have checked for rubbing anywhere near the propshaft can't see anything.
I feel that it is carb related could the fuel in the float chamber clear away from the jets?.
Steve.

I have just had another look and what I have found is I have a heat shield mounted on top of the alternator and I remember when setting up the belt
the pulley was quite close to the panel, guess what the pulley has been grinding on the aluminium I can see the score marks, so this problem is sorted
just the carb one now.

The engine is a Brian Randal, he sets them up on his Dyno before you collect it. I have not had it on a rolling road though.
This was the first time I have used the car other than on the drive at home.

In relation to the fuelling, check that the non return valve on the tank breather is working the right way around. I throw mine around Brands on its
first outing and a 'missfire' was caused by the fuel starvation on the tank.

Hi even tho the engine has been set on the dyno it dosent allow for the fact that you are turning tight corners if you see what i mean. Are you
running at donnington if so come and find me and i will take a look at the jetting and see what can be done jetting wise as we carry all the jets and
needle files. It still isnt conclusive that it is jetting tho. Or if you are not at donny on the 17sep we will be doing a load of trackdays at donny
over the next few months as a bit of testing if you wanted to come along at the same time with your car we could try and nail the problem as these
sort of probs only tend to show up on track .
PS was it ok round the rest of the circuit or was it just the hairpin exit as we dont use the extra hairpin for racing. Which would mean that trying
to find the problem on race day would be harder.

Hi also dont use the one way breather valves as they only work one way obviously. Use the ones that have a ball inside and mount it flat so that when
you are driving along they rattle free and allow air in and out but close when petrol pushes it closed if it should ever come to it .

Hi thanks for the info, I will be at Donnington on the 17th. I have spoken to the engine builder and he thinks I may be bogging it down and not
revving it high enough so when I exited the hairpin the second choke opening may cause the stutter by overfueling, he may be right this was the first
time out with the car so I was trying to bed the engine in. I should be testing at Mallory the hairpin there will be a good test.
