damaged crowns rover v8 ali pistons

stripping my v8 and some of the pistons are 'crowns' are pitted / coroded. can post pictures once I found my didgital camera

cant seem to find any info via google on if they were coated or its just that they were polished and this polishing has become damged anybody on here shed any light.

Any help apreciated.

Sounds like the engine has been run too lean and the damage is caused by pinking. Do you know if the engine had been run on LPG? if so the ignition can be too advanced for petrol so you can get pinking when you switch fuels.
