Hydraulic valves again
Cause my Vauxhall x20xer engine (faster version of the x20xev with 160 bhp) was tapping alot, I took the hydraulic valves out of the engine.
However, I don't know if they are alright or not. I can't move the pin in the middle up or down, but I can rotate the pin.
I also have some old valves of a c20xe engine, and with these valves it is possible to move the pin up and down. (or is this perhaps a sign that these
are worn-out?

I tried posting questions on the 'vauxhall forums' - there are quite a few boy racers on there who aint gotta clue but i did get some help
from the more knowledgable members.
I'd love to know the outcome as my 2.0l 16v ecotec sounds like a tractor! I'm sure its the lifters but dont fancy stripping the head
unless its gonna cause some damage. Mine have been tapping the the last 3k miles and no probs yet!

You shouldn't be able to move the pin up and down due to the internal valve
system unless you depressurise them first, which should be done if
they are removed for any reason.
The way I was shown by a local engine builder is to slam them hard down onto
a plank till the centre pin falls out, then with a biro or similar push the ball valve
of the centre bit up and squeeze the oil out. They can be flushed with light oil.
The engine will rattle like buggery briefly but it ensures the tappets set themselves correctly.
It's possible the old ones you have have lost pressure over time allowing movement.
I've always found it very hard to tell if they're faulty but a strip and clean can help.
