engine rev rise

If I cover the inlet to my airbox the engine's idle revs rise for a few seconds before falling off. If I take my hands away again, the revs rise again then slowly return to normal. what's that about?

sound like your richening the mixture by restricting the airflow,

you've made your own very manual choke.

Engine may be running weak ? when you cover your air box inlet it causes the mixture to richen and engine to run better until the air is all used the it runs too rich and stalls

Excelent advice. I just richened the mixture from 3 to 3.5 turns out and the problem has gone. The engine starts much easier from cold (2°C today) and only needs choke for a few seconds instead of a few 10s of seconds. The engine now holds its revs when the air intake is blocked and the revs drop slowly as the vacuum pressure on my hand increases. Thanks.
