Whinge time.

Well here I am getting ready to fit engine & gearbox. So I thought, (ok I know thinking is dangerous) why not let a local refurbisher (AKA The Gearbox Centre, in Northampton ) have my gearbox & give it the once over and replace ANY worn parts while they are there.

So I gave them a ring.

They answer the phone and I asked them how much for a basic strip & inspect.

They asked what is wrong with the box.

So I tell them that the box has nothing definately wrong with it other than High milage (approx 200k+) and that it is going into a kit car so I wanted to give it a once over AND REPLACE anything iffy while its having its seals replaced & cleaned.

OK they said, is it out of the car at the moment.

Yes I said its WAITING to go into the car at the mo, I just want it inspected BEFORE it goes in.

OK they said that £130 for the basic strip & rebuild.

OK when can you do it.

Anytime they said.

How soon could you pick it up I asked.

Are you a garage they asked.

No I'm a private house & I've dealt with you before.

Sorry we only collect from garages that we deal with they said. Could you bring it in.

NO I'm a taxi driver & I can't drive around with a spare gearbox in my boot.

Could you get it to one of the the Garages that we deal with.

NO because then they will charge me a handling charge. Why can't you pick up from my house the money is waiting.

Sorry WE ONLY collect from Garages that we deal with.

So you don't want the work then?

Sorry but we only pick...... CLICK goes my phone.

Then you wonder why local trades are suffering. They have a custom built van that is frequently in the area and I HAVE dealt with them on numerous occasions before.

I used to believe that their customer relations and care were excelent. As was their workmanship and honesty.

SO anyone remember what the name of that Gearbox company that uprates the type nine was. Yes I know it was posted in the last 5 months but I'm taking a lesson from THE GEARBOX COMPANY of Northampton, .......... I can't be bothered.

ENJOY.

BGH Geartech??

I think your being a bit harsh on the company... I would expect to have to drop of something like a box myself - but hey ho?

If they aren't interested in picking up from an private individual it would suggest they are busy enough from commercial business...

How have you dealt with them in the past? Taxi Boxes?

Why not get the bits and do it yourself, you will know its right then.
There is a company that advertises rebuild kits for type 9 boxes on ebay, I think they include the seals and baulk rings etc.

I would never expect a company like this to deliver or pick up stuff from a private individual. Does your local motor factor drop off a gallon of oil and filter to you when you want to service your car?

last time I bought a radiator, the guy in my local motor factor gave me a lift home with it - I'll buy any parts from there from now on.

Yes actually, and I get a discount as my wife drives for them

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
