type 3 to type 9 conversion

I am in the middle of changing my gearbox from a type 3 to a type 9.
I know I need the mount in a different place and I know I need a new clutch plate (different size input shaft). The boxes are the same length so I don't need a different length prop BUT the box output splines are different so I do need a new nose on the prop.

So, my question is: Do I have to get a complete new nose and UJ welded to my prop (eg send to Bailey Morris etc) or can I just get a sierra prop, split the front UJ and convert my exising shaft?
If it is the latter, is it an easy DIY job or are there any gotchas? Oh, and I don't suppose anyone has an spare type 9 compatible prop I could raid the bits off do they?

I've got a caterham propshaft for sale. But it might be too short for your application.

It would have to be a transit front joint without the rubber donut and they are peened in so you can't split them if they are the originals.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Hammerhead: Thanks. I am probably best modifying my existing shaft. The advice I have elsewhere is to send it to bailey morris as it is a pig of a job. Anyone confirm/deny that?

Peteff: Is this because the rubber donut is too big for the tunnel or some other reason?
That sounds like another reason to get someone like Bailey morris to sort it out for me

I came up with this cunning plan as well, I discovered it wasn't such a cunning plan for the reasons mentioned above and it definitely wont work with Sierra props - however I have wondered if it could be done with a Mk3 Capri (or Pinto engined Cortina) prop instead.......

Ive also got an RS2000 (type E??) gearbox that has the same output splines as the type 9. I guess that would mean that a RS2000 prop nose would be a option? I am guessing that these would not be rubber donut type.

Toby,

I have a Sierra prop in the loft in the garage if you want to borrow it to see if it's a workable proposition.

Won't be able to get it out until Sunday, though as I'm off to Doncaster tonight and won't be back before tomorrow eve.

a update as I have finished the job.
In the end I called Bailey Morris. £50 and 24 hours later I had a new type9 nose and two UJs. An hour and a half with my vice as a press and I now have a type 9 prop with both UJs replace for good measure.
Maybe I was lucky but I found it one of the easier and quicker jobs I have done on the car.

btw. top marks to Bailey Morris for very quick answering of my emails, reasonable price and quick delivery.

BR,
Toby
