radiator fan switch temperature

This is causing me confusion. I know that the thermostat on the pinto engine operates at 88deg though the Haynes doesn't specify the operating temp of the engine.

I've just bough a VW302 polo Rad and I'm trying to source a fan switch.

What temp should the fan switch operate the fan. Logically to me it should be higher than 88deg or else the thermostat wouldn't open but how much higher above 88deg should the fan operate?

I know GM, Ford switches fit the 302 so can anyone help me out with what temp switch I should be getting

I'd be really grateful for the temp and car/age etc switch they've used and a part number would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance

i would think normal fan operation would be close to 95? have a mercedes and IIRC, the red line in the temp gauge is at 120º and the fan switches at around 90. the Smart forfour switches at around 95 too IIRC. i guess its because they have pressurized cooling systems, but dont they all?

I've used a Polo radiator, and VW switch purchased from German Swedish French. When I bought the switch, the only query was, do I want one with 2 or 3 terminals. I went for the one with 2. Although my engine is a normally aspirated Cosworth, I think the Pinto may well run at the same temperature. Although the water temperature gauge is only a rough guide, the VW switch operated at about 90 degrees C.

On a slightly different note. What would anyone's "OMG shut if off!" temperature be???? Most temp gauges seem to have the 120 as just mentioned but ?? that seems rather toasty!!!!

I have a K-series with re positioned thermostat (in engine outlet). My stat is 88 degrees and my fan is set to 90.
My temp appears to be 85-90 on a cold day.
As it is a K, I cr*p my self if it gets to 95 !!!

My fan kicks in at 95 degrees (controlled by ecu) and seems about right as it only comes on when in stationary traffic - most of the time the temp hovers between 85 - 90.

Cheers,
