probably the O2 sensor or possibly the MAFM.

two most common things to go with the dis pack not that far behind.

Do you have a water temp gauge? Is it getting up to temp, and then cutting out? If so, might be worth changing the temp sender, as it could be sending the ecu the wrong signal, making it think it's about to melt.

Had a similar problem with a Zetec engined Escort , it turned out to be excessive oil pressure pumping up the hydraulic tappets . Might be worth getting the oil pressure checked.

Sounds like the problem I had with my tintop in the recent petrol contamination situation. I was told that the O2 sensor is bypassed until the engine comes up to temperature, then it starts spluttering/losing power/cutting out. Sensor replaced, now it's fine. Not necessarily the problem with yours, but worth checking.

Try unplugging the coolant water temp sensor. If the fault appears instantly or if the fault doesn't appear when it usually does, then it was a temperaure dependant fault. That could be the O2 or whatever. This will tell us if the temp thing is red herring! A similar fault on my Vectra (although not always as predictable) cost me a fortune at the local Vauxhaul dealer. They fitted new crank sensors, cam sensors,MAF, O2 etc....
Some chum of mine commented that his Vectra had similar faults but it was fixed by the garage who, as well as fitting £300 worth of new parts, also fitted a new battery. I fitted a new battery and the fault was no more!!
Keep us up to speed......

i used to work as a vauxhall mechanic i will put money on it being the ecu temp sensor which is located on the inlet manifold its brass with a blue plastic collar and two wires going to it. reach down the back of the manifold from the top and you will feel it. all its doing is telling the ecu that the engine is running at a really high or low temp i used to get them reading anything from 200 plus to 200 minus degrees this will cause the engine to cut out the car wil start but as soon as it starts to heat up the tempreture change makes the sensor go haywire hope this helps

It does sound suspiciously like the fuel contamination problem recently.

you can try unplugging the o2 sensor, but leave it screwed into the exhaust. the engine should still run ok without it, though you may get MIL on. if it runs ok when hot then you know you need a new one.

the problem as I understand it with the knackered ones is they tell the ECU lies and it tries to compensate the fuelling to the point where the engine can't run any more. If it's disconnected the ECU just ignores it and falls back to its maps.

it should be on the inlet manifold put your hand down the back of the throttle body from the top and feel your way down you should find it there. its the ecu temp sensor not the one for the gauge
