Help! Alternator Clearance

Hi, I've got the day off today so i've been freazing my nuts off in the garage. I'm trying to align my engine, as I'm going to make my engine mounts over Christmas.

Here is the current config:

Pinto 1.6 from a capri.
Sump clearance 3" off the ground.
Bellhousing 1" from tunnel (as close as i dare!)
Everything else is well away from the chassis.
The alternator clears by 1" (I have it at the limit of adjustment)

My questions are:

Does this look like enough clearance?
Should the engine be lower? (I reckon it could go another inch lower but the alternator will only get closer to tube FU2)

There are lots more photos in my archive.

Any help... Thanks.
David

can you not extend the slot a bit to get more adjustment?

saying that I think there's just enough room, but when you get the belt on it will move out. If you have a welder you could move that tube forward a bit or replace it with a curved tube.

Thanks Mr Whippy. Just thought of a bigger problem.

as it sits I will need to put the steering column through the middle of the alternator.

"Hi, I've got the day off today so i've been freezing my nuts off in the garage. "
ive been outside under the lean to all week lol brrrrr it looks good to me my engine don’t move much at all and my bell housing is probably 1inch from the bulk head. my shortened sump is the same height as the bottom of the type 9 bell housing about an inch below the underside of the car. don’t forget that when making the engine mounts to allow for some sag in the rubber once they are loaded with weight.

yeah well usually the chances of being able to use that standard mount are about nil

just checked. If i pull the engine right back 1/2 cm clearance on bellhousing. the alternator just has enough clearance for its full swing. however looking at that it still doesn't solve the steering column problem.

My minds made up. Steering column in first. then i'll have to make a new alternator mount and adjustor bracket.

how come you are having this porblem?

surely the pinto in book chaqssis has been done to death and you are bulding +4Book so should have even more room.

can;ltthe alternator go on the other (passenger side?)

bu993r. Sorry that sounded wrong when I read that. I've just realised. I'm not making a +4 chassis. its a +2 which is 44" wide not 42". Worse still i've been saying +4 for ages. it is +2. Please feel free to shoot me.

Would you be able to put the alternator in a position similar to this
[img][/img]

The bracket was obtained from Pilgrim Cars for the Sumo.

Mine's a pinto in a standard chassis and it's about 5 inches further back. You'll have to get out of the seat to change gear in that.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Pete how does your bellhousing fit down the tunnel? did you widen it? If you look at Riches ^^ and mine the gearbox wont fit any further back, its really wide and would mean sacrificing foot width. I plan on making a remote gear shift.

My chassis is 2" wider but I put one inch in each footwell.

I think i'll fit the steering rack then make up a bracket to lift the alternator higher.
