Rover LT77 box
anyone care to comment on the strength and suitability of the rover LT77 box in a locost? to take up to 250bhp?
seen one for sale with a bellhousing.

250bhp is no problem. The main problem with these boxes was to do with shaft alignment not the strength, so if it whines - walk away. RPI engineering
have quite a lot of blurb about them, but it all seems to be geared towards selling the newer R380 box which externally is identical but doesn't
suffer the same problem.
Lots of people seem to recommend T5 boxes but they are probably rarer in this country than the LT77. Another alternative people use is the Toyota
'box from the Supra which comes in 5 and 6 speed variants and is very strong indeed.
We are getting one at the weekend, it's an SD1 vitesse one so it has bigger bearings and shot pened (sp?) bits and bobs which apparently makes
it better. I'm not sure if the better bearings fixes the alignment problem though.

Sounds quite good. Do you mean it already have a bell housing compatible with the T series motor? Any idea of mileage etc? It's always a
minefield buying such things. We just bought a V8 without seeing it. Hopefully it'll be all ok but who knows?!

yeah, he bought the bellhousing to use in an MK apparently. First refusal goes to whoever buys the T16 engine off him, but i'm not in a terrible
rush for one anyway. see what happens i guess. thanks for your help anyway!!

No problem
Good luck, it seems like a good deal if it's in good condition and the belhousing probably isn't cheap new. I've seen V8 belhousings
by themselves go for nearly £100.

I'd agree with Mackie, as I paid £140 for a Vitesse box with bellhousing. I too have seen bellhousings go for over £100 on their own. My gearbox
is a Vitesse model (apparently) and it should have stronger bearings or whatever it is that causes the misalignment problem.
As I understand it, if you get a gearbox which is just starting to have the misalignment problem, it can be saved by replacing the bearings with the
Vitesse type and will be fine for "many thousands of miles". However, if the misalignment has already caused the mainshaft and layshaft
gears to wear then it is too late and the gearbox is basically a scrap unit. I think I read this on the RPI website IIRC.
If you are thinking of using the T-series engine then be aware that it is very heavy. Heavier in fact than the V8 and is also very tall. I have one in
my 800 Vitesse. It is a good engine except for the notorious oil leak... I "fixed" my oil leak last year and even though I had the ehad
skimmed and used the Klinga/klinger gasket from Rover it is leaking again. A real pain in the a$$!!
Anyway, hth,
Craig.
