Engine to Gearbox

Im having a bit of trouble getting my pinto onto my mt75 gearbox, ive always been told they fit together so i dont think this is the problem. I have fitted a new clutch and lined up the clutch plate splines so they are central. I have the gearbox on a workbench and lower the engine down to in, i have moved the crane forward and the input shaft goes in and the when in gear the propshat wont turn, meaning that the shaft has lined up with the plate.

But the engine and gearbox wont go together properly after this, they are about 3/4 inch apart. Whats the best way to do it, am i doing somthing wrong, its hard to put squeeze them together with the engine being on a crane. I have tightened the bolts at the top but this just opens the gap at the bottom up, and there are no bolts at the bottom, just the side and top.

Also what diamter is the 2.0l pinto flywheel, it looks fine and fits in the bell housing but just wanted to check its the right one as its not straight out of a sierra.

Thanks

Take the clutch assy off completely and try it...it will give you peace of mind that a) the spigot shaft and bearing are a match, and b) the box and engine interface is good.

Then I would slide all the clutch assy onto the splines in the box upto the release bearing, and check how much shaft stuck out...too little would be a bad sign...wrong cover perhaps?

Just a few thoughts on what I'd do..

I should check you've got the plate in the right way round. I know it sounds daft but it's not the first time it's happened.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Hi,
I don't know Ford stuff but my Rover V8 had a few dowels around the mating faces and I had to clean out the bores where these dowels locate before I could easily get my 'box and engine together. Best bet is a small wire brush attachment for an electric drill.

Sorry if this is a daft suggestion as I'm sure the other suggestions above are more likely but it's always the simple stuff which catches me out... (Don't say it!! )

Cheers,
Craig.

i know the plate is the rightway round as it has "Gearbox side" stamped on it.

The pinto doesnt see to have any dowels on it. ill try mating the engine and box without the clutch next time i get chance.

Thanks

Greggors84,

Is your MT75 definately from a 2.0 not a v6? Because the v6 has 1" or so longer input shaft.

Good Luck,

James

James,

I thought all the v6 2wd sierra's were type 9's. All the later v6's were 4x4 with a transfer box. The longer input shaft was only on the 2wd ones as far as I remember..

[waits to be corrected]

Ned.

Quite possibly!

Unfortunately I failed to appreciate how rare my Dad's manual 2.9i Granada apparently was so didn't pay much attention to it!

The post here by Graceland does suggest it is possible that it's an MT75 though. And if Sierra v6's had a change from Type9 to MT75 then i can't see what Granada's wouldn't- but that's entirely supposition!

Nope definately a 2l as i removed it myself, unless 2 cylinders were lost, an the 2 banks merged into 1 when the engine went bang. Maybe...

im back at uni now, so will be a week or so until i can have a look at it again. Thanks for the advice, more is welcome.
