OT..Tintop wheels coroded inplace
tegwin - 8/7/07 at 02:51 PM

SLightly off toppic...

I bought a second hand car a week ago....Decided I wanted to fit mudflaps to it to protect the bodywork....

Jacked the car up..whipped out the wheel bolts....but I cant for the life of me get the wheel off...

I tried tugging it, hitting it but its likley to fall off the jack than actually get the wheel off...

Im guessing there is corrosion between the alloy and the hub which is normal, but I have never seen it so bad that the wheel simply refuses to come off...

Is there any way of "pulling" the wheel off without damaging anything?

Don't tighten them up fully and then drive it slowly and turn side to side.

Not aproved way - slacken the nuts 1/4 of a turn and drive SLOWLY arround the block.

we get this all the time at work. jack up and support the car remove 3 wheel nuts and half remove the fourth then with a large rubber mallet or hammer and a wooden block knock them off from the back turning the wheel a little after every strike
wire brush or emery clean the hubs after removal then smear with a little coppa slip before refitting.
its usually caused by disimilar metals corroding together and by dealers not removing wheels when servicing.

As Agriv8 above but get SWMBO to drive it round the block.

loosen wheel nuts, jack the car up, put in on axle stands (important!!) remove the jack remove the wheel nuts and give the tyre a good hard kick alternately either side then turn though 90 degree's or so and repeat. They can be a pain sometimes, refit with copper grease on the faces.

Slacken the wheel nuts 1 to 2 turn drive forward 2 yards slam the brakes on --- repeat in but reverse --- repeat in 1st

Not as dangerous as trying to get if off whilst on the jack!
