Mondeo TDCI Common rail fuel pump
carlknight1982 - 28/9/08 at 01:20 PM

Has any one changed a common rail pump on a TDCI mondeo (53 plate) i had some contaminated fuel in my tank by the looks of things its gotten throught to my pump it was playing up before i took it off the road last september, its been sat in the garage for 12 months regularly started etc etc i put it back on the road MOT and it flew through the Emmisions test then i went to take it out the next day and didnt even get to the end of the road before it stalled itself 6 times in 200 yards! a mate put it on his diagnostic computer and its injection control pressure above/below desired level, my experiance with common rail engines tells me its the pressure pump and the fact that there is no pressure coming out of the pump
so my question is has anyone changed or stripped one of these pumps? i dont fancy the £1200 ford quote!

advice please lads and laddetts

Carl,
It's a bit tight but do able, the pump is driven off of the timing chain so you need to lock the flywheel and the cams after you have removed the timing over off of the end of the engine. I've got some good pictures of it all out of the car from when rebuilt my engine, pm me your email adress and I can send them to you if that's any help

Id do a leak back test on the injectors as a knackered injector due to contamination can play havoc witht the fuel pressure regulator, also giving no pressure.

Done several on Focus's which I think is the same engine. Not too difficult but taking the alternator drive off make things easier to insert crank timing tool . Mel

diffrent to a focus engine, can be done with minimal strip down,ie,remove inlet manifold then the small round cover in the front timing chain main cover, fit special plastic tool to hold the chain tension and remove the pump.No pin req as a tdci is just a pump not an inj pump.couple of hours max.Iwould advise cleaning out the fuel pipes and inj pipes.as well, and fingers crossed the injctors are ok.

tank has been emptied and purged, fuel lines have been purged and bled filter replaced and bled fuel lines from filter to injectors have been purged and forced full of fuel by a manual pump i dont think its an injector as i would expect to see a fault code for it, and it was also running sweet as a nut on the day of its mot prior to this problem and that was on the bad fuel.
