I think the light pressure turbo saab engine produces a fair bit of torque and would be concerned about using a type 9 even if you did find a bellhousing to suit it.

CS means its a saloon rather than a hatchback. If the cars standard It wont be an Aero engine if it's got a CS badge on the back and you can usualy tell if its a lpt eco as ECO is usualy written on the DI cartridge on top of the engine. Also the eco engines were only introduced towards the end of the 9000 run so if its older than about an M plate it will be a full pressure turbo which would actualy be the engine to go for.

It's a good engine but mating it to a rwd 'box will be a problem, it's a bit big and heavy for a 7 and as has been mentioned a type 9 definitely wont be up to it.

aha, now this one is interesting.....

the post 1994 saab turbos use a vauxhall std bellhousign pattern, and can be mated to a type 9 using the vauxhall XE to ford type 9 bellhousings, available for £140 from several suppliers.

Don't think the earlier engines can be, but the late 2.3 full pressure turbos are still great engines and can be very highly boosted even on stock bottom ends.

You can also get a bellhousing to mate the vauxhall XE engine to Borg Warner T5 (i.e. 2wd cossie) box so this will then allow fitment of the 9000 turbo (post 1994) engine to the cossie box, which is okish to 500hp ish. TJ motorsport supply these to my knowledge

tough as old boots those saab engines!

I was going to use one in my new grasser (and still wish I had sometimes!! ) but the problem was that none of the transverse vauxhall gearboxes would take the power (350hp ) that the saab motor would be poking out.

I was looking at removing the turbo and replacing it with a mechanical supercharger (eaton m60 or m90), was fairly convenient as the compression is already ok etc i.e. it was a "blower ready" engine that was very tough in std condition.

Its just the gearbox/gear ratios issue that I had trouble with, and the £3k price tag for a suitable gearbox.

With a rwd application a borg warner T5 should do the trick

Just remember that your engine needs to be the later type to fit the vauxhall bellhousing!

PS don't be under the illusion that just cos the engine is £75 this will be a cheap project, your budget will go shrply upwards very quickly! You're definitely on the right lines with megasquirt though, but remember the find a rolling road that will map it and that will map turbo engines..........a lot of them may not want to know, and you WILL melt it if you do it yourself!

ive been doing a bit of thinking and i might use the standard ecu for now. because if i use megasquirt ill be temped to just wind the boost up then prob blow it to bits. ive got a few pressure switches and solinoids ill make up a crude boost control just to limit it in first and second gear to help save the box. then if all gos well ill put the megasquirt on better box then see what it can do lol. ive killed a few gearboxs in my time so it will all be fun lol.

I say go for it!!!

The Saab bottom end is xtremely strong and good for serious BHP..

I have a 2ltr XE in my offroad racer and intend to trial a 2.3 Saab lump when i get a chance...

Let us no how it goes.
