I have been reading the search posts about gear indicators and cant make up my mind.

I want to know if:

1. You have one and its works.

2. You have one and you cant get it to work.

3. Which one and how much was it.



Also i have found this gear indicator with a shift light


How does the shift light work? ie how does it know when to come on?

only had em on bike but the7y allways worked well i think mine were datatool ones

I have a datatool on mine, I could not live without it.

There is a gear indicator built into the Veypor. Works brilliantly, using Math to work out the ratio between road speed and revs.

Easy to set up. From a standing start engage 1st, pull away, drive for 10 seconds at a steady speed, press a button, change into 2nd, drive for 10 seconds at a steady speed, press button, repeat until you run out of road or gears!

P.S. It gets confused very occasionally by a slipping clutch, or bucket loads of wheelspin.

Had a Acumen DG8 on mine never did get it to work properly gave up in the end and flogged it on ebay for nearly as much as i payed for it

Got a a digidash 2 now and the gear indicator works spot on!

as you asked about gear indicators and not dashes ive voted 2: You have one and you cant get it to work.

Have one on digidash, never look at it, seat of pants tells me all I need to know.

If you have time to look at it then you ain't driving fast enough (off road of course)

In a BEC shift lights probably worth it as they rev up that fast, saves you mistakenly hitting the limiter but do you ever enter a corner thinking "mmmmm wonder what gear I'm in ???" or exit for that matter. Neutral light another matter, a must have.

From previous experience on both a Fireblade and ZX12R engine, I wouldn't even consider trying to fit an Acumen or a Datatool gear indicator Couldn't get either one to work properly and spent loads of time trying to set them up without much success. Unless it's made by GIPro, I wouldn't bother fitting a stand-alone gear indicator.

They are useful for road driving. It's difficult to remember which gear you're in and even though you know you're in sixth gear on the motorway, you always check just to see if there's another one left.

Most gear indicators work by determining the ratio of road speed to engine speed so how well they work is usually down to how you set them up, and there seems to be a knack to it.

I have a gear indicator in my dash which works for 2nd thru 5th, but hasnt got a clue about 1st

To be honest do you really need a gear indicator? If you are blasting along having fun you just keep the revs in the power band and it doesnt matter what gear you are in. If you are crusiing on A roads or motorways stick it in 6th and forget about it. The you just have to get in the habit of countng down the gears when you change down.

Hmmm i think i will keep the thread running for a bit before i made a decision.

I've just bought a Digidash 2 Lite for my gear indicator - and a few other features!

Heard many positive things about it so can't wait to fit it. Support seems excellent too.

I've got a homebrew gear indicator on my website. Works off microswitches on the gear stick and a signal from the neutral light. Costs all of £10 to make.

I must admit I don't bother though!!!

It's really quite easy to keep count and if you lose count a quick look at RPM and MPH will let you know what gear you're in.... Though on my ST1100 I've only got 5 gears to keep count of which makes it a bit easier....

I designed the gear indicator before I'd driven a BEC much. I thought I'd never get used to the gears and that I'd constantly forget which gear I'm in. In real life it doesn't really happen....

The advice was.

1) I only had 1 magnet for best/quickest gear change display you need as many as possible upto 12 i believe. I could only fit 6 max as the KOSO dash can only take 6 (with out me doing some calcs to sort out the speed).

2) was the tach connection this is the point where I think they went way up on customer service. the guy I spoke too went off and found the exact wire with the colour for me to connect too. the stayed on the phone whilst I found it and confirmed what I was looking at.

once this was done the car got jacked up the DG8 got setup and worked first time.
