When the car is running and I put it into gear the engine just stalls straight away without releasing the clutch. I don't think it's because there is not enough travel on the pedal because it does the same thing when the clutch lever on the engine is operated directly and turned as far as it will go.
When the pedal is pressed I can feel it pulling against the springs.
The haynes manual shows a diagram with 9 friction plates and my engine only has eight: 1No. inner, 1No. outer and 6No. normal. From other posts I see that there are differences between blade engines but is mine correct for a '98 engine? (I think)

Anybody got any ideas or suggestions please?

Sounds electronic to me rather than mechanical.

The engine will have a cut off so that you can't put the engine in gear when say the side stand is down (on the bike). You may need to bypass that switch if you haven't already done so.

The way to confirm it is electronic is to jack the back wheels off the ground, give it a few revs and then select a gear. If the wheels spin OK then agree it's the clutch, but if it still stalls then definately electronic.

seems electrical to me too... check safety start procedure wiring. I would say it's probably red/green wire from starter relay not going to earth.... Neutral will still light and go out but may shut the engine when in gear... maybe check wiring against our clutch diode scematic, we know ours will work... download/view from the site.

Thanks very much for replying to my question, you were right it was electrical. I had earthed the side stand switch wire from the ECU to the neutral switch wire. So when the car was in neutral the wire was earthed but when I put it into gear the earth was lost and the ECU cut the engine.
I would never have thought it was electrical so thanks for suggesting it.

Once again locostbuilders saves the day for us too.

We just had exactly the same problem, we thought it was a clutch problem but turned out it was the same electrical one. Earthed the red/green wire and problem sorted.
