i have a 97 blade 919 engine. will any of the other blade looms fit my engine or do i need one off the same engine and year etc??

you need the right loom and ecu for the engine
of the early carb'd blades the main difference as far as running is the TPS or not

i already have the original loom and ecu for my engine but the previous owner made a right hash of the loom. just wondering if starting again with a fresh loom would be easier than trying to sort the old one ???

It might be, but in reality by the time its in the car and evreything else working it will be pretty chopped up anyway.
I'd be inclined to strip it down to the basics you need to make it run and build the rest up

To be fair, other looms could be made to work, BUT - that's the popular choice of year when buying a loom anyway, so you'll be ok finding one - Give Andy Bates a shout, he's probably got one on the shelf, along with good prices and great advice...
