So how much does it cost to tax a bec.

It might be different if a kit is registered on a brand new plate (?) but most if not all fall into the same bands as any other pre 2001 car, so its considered the same as any other 1000cc car, which I think last year was ~£110 for a year.

ALL cars registered after March 23rd 2006 with more than 225g/km £210 per year

but g/km of co2 isnt tested at sva is it so it cant be emissions related.

it's taken from the tables laid down by VOSA. if your car isn't listed then I beleive you come under the visible test category (same as cars registered before March 2001) so £110 up to 1549cc or £175 over 1549cc

how is that fair when a smoky old banger costs £50 a year less to tax than my 3 year old tin top running unleaded and a cat ?

I know that a car engined kit car is taxed based on the rating for the engine donor... however there is nothing to say what a BEC should pay - I have actually contacted VOSA about all this so will let you know when/if they reply!

to get an accurate co2/km value you would have to put the car on a rolling road and run in though a set test procedure (ie to simulate road driving) whilst testing emissions. the tests manufacturers have to do is very long and it would be impractical to do that for every car.

you cant even take the manufacturers numbers for cecs as many engines are found in different models all of which have different ratings and as weight has a massive effect, kit cars should be much more efficient than the donor.
