what kind of spec would this be?
0-60, 1/4mile, weight, power etc...
heard about turbo kits for this engine... is it worth doing?
Turbo any bike engine, and you might as well foget about locost....
I'd heard that 0-60 it isn't much better than an R1 - probably 4s ish. Where it gains is above 60, so 1/4 mile times are likely to be
better. 1/4 miles for R1 BECs are often in the 12s.
Busas make circa 180 BHP but their capacity means that you get it at lower revs than, say a 2007 R1 with 180 BHP. You get more torque with the busa
too but it weighs a bit more.
It is a popular engine for BEC builders but they're not cheap and the cost of a dry sump adds to that.
what do you mean? too much power?
forgot to add... that the locost wont be used for track days (since there arent any tracks in malta), just 1/4mile once in a while.
was reading on here that you can have reverse gear with the bike gearbox. how is this done? from where can i find the parts needed?
also... would a prop shaft and diff from an escort mk1/2 be fine?
also... is there any convertor or something of the sort to connect the propshaft to the gearbox?
(sorry too many questions)

Had my 540kg heavy weight 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds...
BHP meter says 201bhp
Yep, if I recall correctly my mate's Megabusa ran was around 12.8s / 114mph on a runway 1/4 mile event, so probably 12.5 or so on decent tarmac. My R1 Locost ran the same day at 12.98s / 110mph so not a lot in it, although his car is a bit heavier than mine.
thanks guys for that info.
what i meant with 'is a turbo is worth it or not?' was if the power gain and drive ability of the car are worth that money.
any answers to this question?

Yep it certainly makes them very quick and if you get it right they feel just like a much bigger normally aspirated engine, very little lag and the
turbo spools up nice and early so doesnt really interfere once you're really on it.
Still bloody expensive though
Yeah bike turbos dont suffer with lag as bad as car engines as the primary reduction helps them spool faster and the gearbox is close ratio as well
keeping it on the boil
thanks guy for the replies! some really good info. found a guy on ebay who sources engines...
approx. £1600 delivered to malta from the uk.. good price?
yet another question....
was talking to my dad about the idea of the hayabusa locost and he came up with this...
how do you connect the trottle and clutch to the pedal box? the breaks aren't a problem i guess since its something independent from the engine
right?
£1600 to malta - Hayabusa???????????
accelerator is just an extended bike cable attached to the peddle

Depends on the age of the engine, condition an mileage! Also depends on shipping costs.
To give you some idea I paid £2250 for an 03 engine with 5k miles on it just under a year ago. No delivery costs in that price!
i bought a complete busa for 3k and sold off the unwanted bits - def the way to go if you can find one.
engine is an 03 with approx 2500miles. £200 shipping cost. so engine is £2400.... sound like a good price then ay?
to buy a complete hayabusa it would cost me over £5000 locally!!!! not that worth it i guess.
Make sure you get all the ancilliaries you need, loom, ecu, etc.
At 5k for the bike, no it's not worth it.
the engine includes INJECTORS / CARBS AIRBOX AND LOOMS ECU
what else should i look out for?
Buying off Ebay is a bit of a risk IMHO unless it's from a personally recommended source or they have a lot of good feedback for supplying bike
engines specifically.
Have a word with Malc at Yorkshire Engines (Username
yorkshire-engines on Locostbuilders), he seems to be
very competitive on price, very helpful and has supplied a lot of people on here (not myself) with engines. He'll supply everything you need for
a BEC conversion and you'll be getting it from a known source.

Thats fine then, buying through Malc on Ebay is as good as anything
thanks chris! saw yorkshire engines recommended in many posts. glad they're good traders.
if any1 else has anyother reply feel free to post
What gear ratio are you guys running to get 0-60 in the 4s and 1/4 in the 12s. New guy trying to plan everything out. Im in america going to use a
gsxr 1000 motor with a miata or mx5 rearend. Or thats the plan right now.
Also how come there arent that many bec with this motor(gsxr 1000), y so many with R1?
