BEC wiring
bassett - 26/4/08 at 01:29 PM

Hi, im trying to work my way round the R1(02-03) loom. Ive used the wiring diagram but really need some help so the build can move on.

1st q - in the pic what are these connections for? the red one is 4 pin and has a blue/red, blue/yellow, blue and black wires.
The blue is 8 pin and has green/yellow, blue, blue black, red/black, red/white,2xblack and brown wires.
2nd q - not wiring but in the pic below the blue connection what is that metal unit with the two cut pipes?
3rd q - I have a bosch pump with a pos and neg. The bike has two connecting plugs and im not sure what to do with them.
4th q - Just to check do i wire the start switch connection on the bike straight to my ignition barrel?
5th q - I think these connections are redundant - right handlebar, rear brake switch, and headlight relay connections - should i just cut these off?

Thanks for any help
Adam

1. I think that the Blue plug is the Right handlebar switch plug and feeds:
lighting switch
stop switch
start switch
front brake light switch
And the Red plug is the Ignition switch plug.

2. Don't know - Fuel pressure regulator?

3. In my opinion, you would be better off getting an R1 Pump.

4. Yes, you can do that fine.

5. Having found the right handlebar switch contradicts my answer to No. 1.
Rear brake light switch - yes, if you are using the front brake light switch as your "trigger".
Headlight relay connections. Some people use them for the headlights, some don't - it's up to you!

I can't answer all your q's but here goes on the rest.

q3, The two connectors are for the fuel pump and for the fuel level sensor. look at the wiring diagram for what is which. The fuel level positive goes to earth via a 680ohm resistor to stop the light flashing on the dash. You can not use the R1 pump as it will not fit into the sump part of the MNR tank, the pump is too big diameter to fit. I wired the fuel pump wires to a relay then modded the MNR loom so that the pump supply wire is switched by the relay controlled by the fuel pump wires in the bike loom.

q4, No you can not wire that straight to the ignition barrel. the ignition will supply 12v were you need to earth the starter wire for the starter to turn over. If you want to use the ignition barrel you will have to wire in a relay to switch the earth for the starter.

q5, yes cut them out.

Q2. Its the cold start, the two rubber pipes are connected to the cooling system. It raises the revs when cold.

This is from Rob Collingridge's FuryR1 site.

It would have taken me a lot longer without Robs description.

http://www.robcollingridge.com/kitcar/design/engine/electrics.html

"57 - Right Handle Bar Switch
Not present and not required. Blue connector, 6 pins, 6 wires. This would connect 58, 59 and 60 to the main harness if I had it. 59 is the engine kill switch and 60 is the start switch which need to be connected to my dash switches.
58 - Front Brake Switch
Not present and not required. Handle bar mounted switch, not present and not required.
59 - Engine Stop Switch
Handle bar mounted switch, not present and not required. These wires will be shorted to leave the engine in permanent 'run' state and the engine will be switched off via the main ignition switch (1). In the bike loom, normal operation is to switch power to the the starter circuit cut-off relay (10) and the spark plugs (15).
60 - Start Switch
Not present and not required. This is replaced by the dash mounted, engine start button. It connects the starter circuit cut-off relay (10) to ground and if all the other conditions are met, this then grounds the negative side of the starter relay (8), thus starting the engine. "

Hope that helps,

Thanks for the extra info its sorted a few things out but also popped up a few new problems of course Most i understand how to sort, but with the neutral switch what is this wired too?

Neutral switch is on the top of the gearbox with a single terminal on it (round pin I think). It connects the start relay via a light blue wire to earth.

If you don't want it to only start in neutral connect the light blue to earth instead. If your using the bike clocks and still want the neutral light then connect the light blue/white from the clocks to the neutral switch instead of the start relay.

Think thats right.

The T piece on the left comes up from the water pump and the other end goes up to the top of the radiator or header tank.

Hope that helps.
