Plan C - Chain drive diff!
lsdweb - 20/1/06 at 01:16 PM

Ok, so Plan A was to use my Blackbird engine and Powertec diff in my single seater – this idea was scrapped when my mate offered to buy the Blackbird back from me. I was quite happy with this as the Blackbird doesn’t have the best reliability record in cars and is 37cc over the class limit.

Plan B – buy an R1 (great package, strong, should survive without dry sumping) – bolt this to the Powertec diff – away to go. I got the R1 yesterday and the diff doesn’t fit (I guessed this would be the case) so,

Plan C – sell the Powertec diff and go chain drive – all I need now is a diff unit that has an LSD, easy adjustment, quick change sprocket and is lightweight – any thoughts? I’ve done some searching and noticed that MK are doing one but can’t see what diff it is and what adjustment exists for chain tensioning etc..

Have you phoned them? If you do, keep us posted because I am interested as well.

Martin is doing my car at the moment.

He has used a quaife diff the adjustments are easy

Not sure what he uses in his diff.

But I can highly recommend his fabication design and quality.

One of the features of my car is the engine can be removed with the dif still attached.

The whole set up is mounted on rubber blocks and only four bolts to undo and the whole thing comes out.

give him a call tell him what you want and he will do it.

Quaife do a chain drive diff. They use a fiesta and later escort ATB diff as the base. Its a sealed unit that only requires greasing. Any sproket can be made to fit i'm sure. Demon theives sell it for £490.

Andy.

This site clicky talks about some options.

Using the sierra cosworth to get a cheap (relative term ) LSD might be a good thing.

Martins is a Quaife i think.

Thanks for all the responses - I've looked at the Quaife unit and this seems quite tempting although it'll need mounts etc made and a simple means of chain tensioning but none of that is impossible!

My Powertec diff is on eBay here

most of the hillclimb bike engine cars ive seen use an eccentric bearing carriers that you rotate to tension the chain.

Most of them seem to use a quife fiesta etc diff with a custom gear.

if you want an alternative for a price, you could do worse than give del from DJ racecars a call as they make quite a few of these for their cars. (and gear drives for bike engines......)

their number's 01663 734 518.
