Just want to douible check what the DVLA have told me as it seems to conflict with what others have done here.
I've been told to fill out the V627/1 and then take car for inspection and they will allocate a chassis number. Then I need to apply for SVA,
get a MAC and then register it with nor further DVLA inspection needed?
Does that sound right? I always thought DVLA inspection came after SVA but he says they don't do that anymore.
Main issue is I need a VIN asap for the SVA forms!!

thats the way i did mine,they need a VIN number for the MAC.....however dvla/vosa seem to work in mysterious ways and dont seem to talk to each
other/make up the rules as they go along
I was thinking of just making up a VIN as others have done but not sure I can get away with that anymore
The problem is that YOUR dvla office want to issue you one. Other dvlas, mine included are happy to be told what you want it to be.
Change offices, or dispuite it if you like, for a bit of entertainment
I ignored them and made my own. Sva'd the car and presented the car/mac for inspection and they issued tax/reg etc.
Think about imported cars, they have an existing vin that the dvla accept so why not a "manufacturers" vin (you) provided?
Do what I did and check online with a vin checker for free to see if yours exists, but remember the chances of picking 6 numbers for the lotto and
then a combination of up to 17 letters and digits and you will get an idea of how unlikely you will select the same vin as soimeone else!
I ignored what the dvla said and made my own chassis number up. Sva'd with that lasr friday and have just had my inspection at 10am. No problems
so far. Just waiting for my reg now.
Giev the dvla less to do and it will be so much easier. The plus side of having your car inspected before the sva is you can near enough get your reg
straight away after a pass.
All offices will tell you a different story.

I'm not too bothered about how long it takes to get my plates, just more bothered about getting a VIN in time to get SVA applied for within deadline
Write a letter poropsing a VIN to your local DVLA office explaining the usual about building a kit car.
I received a letter back within 2 days stating my number was fine. Also enclose a stamped addressed envelope as that seems to speed things up for
some reason.
Then simply keep the letter so you can produce it later at registration time if needed.

The problem is DVLA Swansea write "rules" but they don't say how to implement these rules and let the local offices decide how to do
this. So some offices do it one way, others a different way.
Your local office could register a car with a VIN number not of their choosing but if that's the way they want to play it, it's best to do
as they choose. I didn't and it gave Elstree DVLA migraines trying to get their heads round the situation and I ended up having to talk them
through the process of registering a car...
IE unless you want a specific VIN number let them choose one. If you want a specific one just go through SVA, get the MAC and then afterwards argue
the toss and ask them where in vehicle registration statute it says it has to be done the way they're saying... But in all likelyhood
registration will take longer if it goes down that path....
My chassis came from manufacturer with plate welded to the chassis with no. already stamped on it.
Not tried to apply for SVA yet, note to self Must do that soon, but i cant see any problem from what I have read on here
Seems DVLA Leeds are one of those places that don't like user created VIN's very much.
But you haven't created it, just tell them the manufacturer gave you it or if you are the manufacturer make any you want, just make it 17 digits
long.

I told them it was issued to me by the Haynes Roadster Club

That is what is STAMPED on the Chassis.
just asked them to check it before i sent off the SVA forms.
They told me as long as it was already on the chassis then thats OK
I only used numbers on mine, no letters.
